Interview with Nick Wilcock, Managing Director of Credit Suisse in EMEA Regional Management, Chief Operating Officer for Russia and the CIS

Nick Wilcock is a Managing Director of Credit Suisse in EMEA Regional Management, based in Moscow. He is Chief Operating Officer for Russia and the CIS.

Mr. Wilcock joined Credit Suisse Financial Products (CSFP) in March 1992 and during his time with the Bank, has held a number of line and program management roles in the Operations, Product Control and Complex Product Support, Information Technology and Internal Audit departments of Credit Suisse First Boston and CSFP. Prior to that, Mr. Wilcock spent four years in the Audit group of Price Waterhouse and has also worked as a Chemical Engineering Project Manager at British Petroleum.
Mr. Wilcock holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Loughborough and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.


What made you relocate and work in Russia for such an extended period of time?

- I arrived in Moscow in 2006 to help oversee the growth of our Russia Credit Suisse Franchise. Over the last 6 years we have seen significant change including, growth across all of our investment banking businesses, the establishment of an onshore Private Banking business and the development and implementation of a local broker Dealer to accompany our Bank. I have been at Credit Suisse for 20 years and usually changed role every 2 to 3 years so to be in one job for an extended period of time has been a new experience. However the challenge of being involved in this amount of change in a dynamic economic and regulatory environment has kept me energized and motivated and is the main reason for being here.

What differences do you see between work in Credit Suisse Moscow and London offices as well as other Credit Suisse offices all over the world?

- The London Office is much bigger than Moscow and as a result you rarely get exposure to the full breadth of Credit Suisse businesses and the departments that support them.  In Moscow it’s different, there is greater interaction and teamwork between businesses and the support departments are closer to the trading and client activity. In the Moscow office you are also more “hands-on” in terms of the whole life-cycle of a trade or a client deal. The uniqueness of the operating and regulatory environment also means that there is more autonomy of decision making since the expertise lies within Moscow and also a shorter chain of command.

What in your opinion is the most important quality a potential candidate should have in order to have a successful career in Credit Suisse?

- I think there are a number of qualities that you need to have both a successful and also an enjoyable career at Credit Suisse. Firstly since much of what we do is to provide client solutions you need to be creative, intellectually curious and also to have a keen analytical mind. Candidates also need to have to have strong interpersonal/communication skills, the ability to work hard under pressure and also be committed to producing a quality result to any task that they undertake. Finally you must enjoy working in a team and in a flexible, dynamic environment where much of what you do changes from day to day.
